Coronavirus: WhatsApp limits message forwarding to curb misinformation

WhatsApp is trying to curtail the rapid spread of Coronavirus misinformation by placing new limits on the number of times a forwarded message can be shared simultaneously.

A message received by a person on the Facebook (FB)-owned platform that has already been forwarded five times can now only be passed on to one chat at a time.

The new limits are WhatsApp’s strictest yet.

The chat app has been gradually tightening the restrictions on its forwarding function, where a user can easily choose multiple groups or people to receive the message. Two years ago, a user could pass on a forwarded message to 250 groups at once, with each group capable of hosting hundreds of users.

By last year, the company had reduced that limit to five groups at a time. Now it’s one, although a user could theoretically still forward the same message to individuals or groups one by one.

We’ve seen a significant increase in the amount of forwarding which users have told us can feel overwhelming and can contribute to the spread of misinformation,” WhatsApp said in a blog post. “We believe it’s important to slow the spread of these messages down to keep WhatsApp a place for personal conversation.”

WhatsApp has long been plagued by misinformation, but the ease with which its group chats and forwarding capabilities can be used to spread such content has been magnified by the coronavirus pandemic.

Unlike Facebook or Instagram, WhatsApp fully encrypts its messages, meaning the company has no idea what’s being said or shared. And unlike Facebook, it does not have the capability to attach a warning and explanation to posts deemed false by fact checkers.

WhatsApp, like other text messaging platforms, has been used in recent months to spread messages that often contain a mixture of claims about the virus, some accurate and some that have been debunked by medical experts. The problem is now so acute that world leaders are urging people to stop sharing unverified information using the app.

The five-time fowarding limit was introduced after viral hoax messages in India contributed to more than a dozen lynchings in 2018. WhatsApp says forwarding was reduced by 25% as a result.

Experts welcomed the tighter limit announced on Tuesday but said it still doesn’t go far enough.

Bhat, who have studied the spread of misinformation via WhatsApp in India, said stricter forwarding limits should have already been in place.

Banaji and Bhat told CNN Business that without other measures, like being able to report, ban and prosecute users who pass on hateful misinformation, “this new measure for much forwarded content will perforce prove to be ineffective.”

“Our work in India suggested the urgent need for forward limits as one of a bundle of measures in order to curb the rapid spread of hate speech and misinformation,” they added.

A study conducted last year by the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil found that while limiting forwarding to five groups could delay the spread of misinformation “depending on the virality of the content, those limits are not effective in preventing a message to reach the entire network quickly.”

WhatsApp has taken other steps in the light of the coronavirus pandemic to fight misinformation, such as donating money to fact checking organizations, some of which run accounts people can send messages to. They’ve also teamed up with international and national health organizations to create chat bots that can answer people’s coronavirus questions.

The platform is also working on a new feature that would allow users to take a message they’ve received and quickly search the web to check its content. In screenshots shared with TechCrunch last month, a magnifying glass appears next to a message, which would take the user to a related Google search.

A WhatsApp spokesperson told CNN Business that feature is still being tested.

How to effectively clean and maintain your laptop or PC keyboard

Figuring out how to clean your keyboard can be the last thing to think of whilst you’ve simply bought a glittery new laptop PC or a new typing peripheral. But, every PC user knows that dirt and dust can pile up over time, and you’ll finally face the inevitable.

With keyboards, it’s even trickier. If you don’t already know a way to do it, it’s probably difficult to simply know the way to clean your keyboard properly with – not to mention, its nooks and crannies. It isn’t simply a simple scrub and wipe job. You also need to be careful, so that you won’t cause an irreversible harm on your device. That’s on a pinnacle of the reality that dirt and sebum stains are surprisingly difficult to rub off.

So, we figured we’d come up with a hand with a few beneficial tips. Here are distinctive methods to clean your keyboard, whether you’re handiest doing the usual normal care or a proper deep easy. That way, regardless of what kind of a mess, you’ll know how to easy your keyboard.

Keyboard

Removing debris

Everyday messes are unavoidable, especially if you’re used to snacking at your desk or having a meal while working. Unless you're really, really careful, your keyboard will see its share of food particles getting stuck under its keys. Here are few things you can do when that happens:

1. Shake off loose debris.
To remove loose debris, you need to first unplug your keyboard from your computer or turn your laptop off. Then simply turn your keyboard upside down then shake it until the debris is gone.

2. Use compressed air.
If you’ve got debris stuck between the keys and a simple shake isn’t enough, use a can of compressed air to knock it loose. You can also use a rocket blower, but canned air is much more effective and readily available in stores like Amazon.

Cleaning spills

Beverage spills are even harder to deal with. But, don’t worry: just because you spilled liquid on your keyboard, that doesn’t mean you have to buy a new keyboard or laptop.

1. Shake off liquid.
You must immediately turn off your laptop or unplug your keyboard if you spilled liquid on it to prevent damage. Away from your other devices, turn your keyboard upside down, shake it and keep it upside down to get most of the water out.

2. Clean with a lint-free cloth.
To blot out any remaining droplets, use a lint-free microfiber cloth (or any clean absorbent material like paper towel or a t-shirt, if nothing else is available). Then leave the keyboard to dry completely for at least 24 hours – but preferably, up to 48 hours if you can spare it. Do all this while keeping the keyboard in its upside-down position.

3. Deal with those sticky keys.
If you spilled any other liquid other than water, make sure to check each key if it’s sticky. To clean sticky keys, gently and carefully pop off the keycaps with a butter knife or a screwdriver, taking care to note their individual placements. If you’ve got a laptop, check with the manufacturer to double check that those keycaps are removable.

Rub the sticky stain off on the keyboard base and the keycaps with a clean cloth and some alcohol solution or warm water. For hard to reach spots on the keycaps, consider using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Leave them out to dry completely before you place them back on.

Weekly keyboard maintenance

Cleaning your keyboard weekly is best in order to keep it clean and avoid having to spend a couple of hours deep cleaning your keyboard. Doing so will also keep it free of harmful microbes and viruses that could get you sick. Just remember to do all the steps while your keyboard is unplugged.

1. Remove debris.
Shake off loose debris or use compressed air between the keys to remove pieces of food, dust and other particles. You might also consider investing in a mini keyboard vacuum cleaner, which lets you do this step faster and more efficiently. There are also sticky cleaning goo gels available that are also very effective.

2. Clean the keys.
Using a cotton swab or cloth, remove dirt and oil/sebum from the keycaps and between the keys with isopropyl or rubbing alcohol – doing this weekly should prevent buildup as well as kill harmful germs. Dry thoroughly with a lint-free cloth.

How to enable dark mode in WhatsApp for Android

It is finally available on Android — you can now manually set dark mode for WhatsApp, or have the app match the system theme automatically. Here's how you can get started with dark mode on WhatsApp for Android.

As of March 3, 2020, dark mode is rolling out to all WhatsApp users around the globe. Even better, enabling it is very simple. Here's what you need to do.

1. Open WhatsApp from the app drawer or home screen.
2. Tap the action overflow menu (three vertical dots in the top right corner).
3. Hit Settings.

4. Select Chats.
5. Choose Themes.
6. In the Choose Theme dialog box, select Dark.
7. You should see the interface switch to a dark theme.

That's it! You should now have dark mode set up for the messaging service. Dark mode looks particularly good on WhatsApp because of the green accents that are present throughout the interface, and they bring a bit of visual flair to the app.

I've had dark mode enabled for over a week now, and it makes a huge difference in how you use the service. It's easier on the eyes, and if you have an Android 10 phone and set dark mode system-wide, there's better visual consistency.

It's difficult for my songs to hit now — Gasmilla

In 2014, Hiplife artiste, Gasmilla, blew up with his song Telemo and while he was basking in the euphoria, promised to release even more bigger hits but unfortunately, that has been hard to do and the musician now says it is hard to make hit songs.

Since Telemo, Gasmilla real name Odartei Milla Lamptey, has released songs like China, Joo, Speedometer and Sword but they have had little success and he tells Showbiz in an interview that it takes God’s intervention for a musician to release hit song after hit song.

As to why the situation is so, Gasmilla said Ghanaians generally fall in love with a musician’s first hit and wait for something bigger than that and once you are not able to do so you are easily forgotten.

“For instance it will be difficult for Nana Boroo to release a song bigger than Aha Yede or D -Cryme to release a song bigger than Kill Me Shy. It will take a long time for any musician to release songs which will overcome his previous hit,” he said.

“Telemo reigned for nine months and even though I had popular songs like 3 Points, Aboodantoi, Letter To The Government, none of them could match up to Telemo,” he added.

He explained that songs that reign for a long time like Daddy Lumba’s Yentia Obiaa needs serious promotion and even that is not a gurantee that it will work.

When asked why musicians like Ebony had been able to get countless hits, Gasmilla answered that even though the Dancehall artiste is doing so well, her songs do not last long like Telemo did.

Gasmilla said it is only genius musicians who are able to release hit after hit.

Currently, Gasmilla is promoting his single Ak?somorshi, which was released in November 2017. He said he is also working on a couple of songs which he intends to release soon.
